Fiat S.p.A. strengthens its environmental lead in Europe by offering what’s claimed to be the world’s most fuel-efficient gasoline engine. In September, this engine will go on sale in the Fiat 500 minicar. The 875cc unit will be the only two-cylinder engine powering a car in Europe. Fiat asserts that the engine dubbed TwinAir will enable it to keep its edge as the carmaker that offers the lowest average CO2 emissions from its European new-car fleet. Various automakers have sought to topple Fiat from its enviable lead by working to improve the fuel economy of their vehicles and to reduce CO2 emissions.
